Sleepness Nights

Counting train stops could be better than counting sheep for tired commuters. Nodding off on the train might seem like a good way to catch up on a few minutes of precious sleep, but the temptation could lead to a restless night. Western Health sleep specialist Dr David Cunnington says a 45-minute train nap could eat into shut-eye at night for poor sleepers.

And taking 40 winks on the train could also leave commuters feeling sluggish throughout the day. "If you're a good sleeper then catching naps or sleep at opportune times is a good idea," Cunnington said. "But if you're not a good sleeper, then a long nap during the day isn't a good idea because it will take away from your desire and drive to sleep at night. "If you only get a fixed amount of sleep and have a 45-minute nap during the day, that's 45 minutes you won't get at night ... that's very counter productive."
