Internet Research
Australians spend much of their time on the Internet planning holidays, comparing digital cameras and mobile phones, and looking for new cars, research released today finds. It suggests advertising will rise significantly on Australian websites in the next year. This research is groundbreaking as it is among the first to profile Australian search habits.
It found that 96 per cent of users regularly browsed the web to decide on purchases and for news updates. Of all web users, the survey shows 92 per cent research holidays, 90 per cent look for electronics information, 81 per cent look for a new car, 72 per cent are interested in furniture and 70 per cent buy insurance. Search engine advertising jumped 77 per cent from 2004 to 2005. More than $124 million was spent on online ads.
Network PR director Grant Common said web advertising was set to grow "even more substantially" in the next 12 months. But the money could be spent on new forms of net advertising: only 15 per cent of people click on search engines' "sponsored links" Australians are search-savvy with 85 per cent using a search engine instead of going directly to a known website.
